Team 18 faced a challenging start to the VAILO Adelaide 500 as Toyota Forklifts’ Scott Pye and DEWALT Racing’s Mark Winterbottom navigated the soaked track during the opening session of practice for the Supercars Championship.

As rain settled in early on Thursday morning, the conditions proved formidable for the drivers and teams alike. Despite the challenging weather, Pye and Winterbottom tackled the saturated track, finishing 24th and 25th respectively. The track, which remained soaked throughout the session, began showing signs of drying as a faint dry line emerged.

The team utilised the session to trial an array of adjustments, focusing on optimising their wet weather setup, a crucial departure from their dry weather strategies. With the forecast predicting continued rain for Friday and Saturday, the team is intensifying their efforts to ensure a competitive showing in the forthcoming qualifying session for Race 27 on Saturday.

Team 18 returns to action tomorrow for Practice 2 at 12:35pm and Qualifying for Race 27 at 5:35pm local time.

“Tough day. We’ve been struggling in the rain, both cars actually look very similar, but with different setups, so this is something that’s holding us back a little bit.

“Hopefully if it rains tomorrow, we’re ready to try different things and go again and improve the car and be a lot more competitive.

“At the moment it looks like, rain tomorrow, rain Saturday and then dry Sunday, we do need to get better in the rain, so if it rains tomorrow we’re not scared of the challenge. We’ve just got to  improve it and hopefully go in the right direction.”
