DEWALT Racing’s Mark Winterbottom scored a ninth place finish in the final race of the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500, while Hino’s Scott Pye was cruelly taken out of action in the closing stages.
Winterbottom and Pye qualified either side of the Top 10 Shootout, with the pair split by only 0.001sec in 10th and 11th. Winterbottom improved his starting position in the race with a clean lap which saw him climb to fifth for the race start.
Winterbottom completed a clean race to finish 11th on track before being promoted to ninth after track limits penalties were applied. A longer than forecasted second stop was attributed to a fuel flow issue experienced up and down the lane all weekend.
Pye was on track for a strong sixth place finish, however eight laps from the flag his race came to a cruel end after he collected a spinning James Golding who he came across unsighted after the Turn 2 chicane. Golding previously spun under his own steam, before turning around to rejoin the race in the middle of traffic, with Pye the innocent victim in the incident.
Team 18 returns to action for the final round of the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship, the VAILO Adelaide 500 on November 23-26.
