DEWALT Racing’s Mark Winterbottom was third fastest in Practice 2 at the NTI Townsville 500 in a promising start to the weekend for Team 18.

Winterbottom and TRADIE Beer Racing’s David Reynolds started the day in 14th and 16th respectively in Practice 1, before Winterbottom made gains in the afternoon session to be third fastest with Reynolds in 15th on the timesheets.

Both cars initially struggled in the morning for balance, with Winterbottom still chasing performance in the DEWALT Camaro ahead of Saturday’s qualifying and Race 13.

Reynolds went a different direction and struggled to fire a shot in Practice, but will take gains from Winterbottom’s performance to carry on to the rest of the weekend.

The Team 18 crew are also working to change an engine on Reynolds’ Tradie Beer Camaro after picking up an issue in practice, which will be rectified and ready to hit the track tomorrow.

Team 18 returns to action tomorrow for Qualifying at 10:15am, the Top 10 Shootout at 12:05pm and Race 13 at 2:40pm. All the action can be viewed live on Channel 7, Fox Sports and Kayo. Check your local guides for further details.

Practice 1: 14th

Practice 2: 3rd

“We didn’t roll out the truck as comfortable as I thought we might have. I was expecting to roll out with a certain feel of the car, but the team worked really well today and as the sessions went on and the laps went on, we got better and better.

“We ended up third, which was great. It’s nice to carry a bit of form from Darwin. I think we’ve obviously proven we’re good at Darwin, but now we need to prove we’re good everywhere. It’s another tick for the team.

“I thought there’s more improvement in the car to come, so we’ll look at some data, and try and make it a little bit faster tomorrow, but we’ve got to celebrate every little game we make, and third today was a great start to our weekend, so bring on tomorrow.”

“ Today wasn’t the best day.  We rolled out and never really had much pace to show throughout the day.

“We threw in a range of different things and at the end there I think our engine failed a little bit, so we’re getting a new engine overnight which might fix our straight line deficiency, but now we need to work on the corners. It was a bit of a trying day, but it’s all positive. The more dramas you find or uncover, the better the next day gets, so hopefully we can improve tomorrow.”
